Nell D. Whitesides

Nell Whitesides, well known in Lafayette, died Friday, October 30th, 2009, at Cornerstone Retirement Residence. She was surrounded by family and friends who willl miss her greatly for her kind, loving ways, quick wit, and wonderful sense of humor. Nell was born in Hermanville, Mississippi, on March 5th, 1925 to Ruby Elizabeth Foster Davis and William Lee Davis. She was preceeded in death by her husband, mother, father, two brothers: Terrell Davis and Dick Davis and a sister, Ruby Nell Mangum. She is survived by her brother, Paul, and sister-in-law, Peggy Davis. She is also survived by daughters: Beth Gonzalez and husband Dr. Dan Gonzalez of Kingsport, Tennessee, and granddaughters Megan Szabo and husband, Geoff of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Erin Gonzalez of Boston, Massachusetts; Babs Pena and husband Stan Pena, granddaughter Jennifer Pena-Smith, husband Michael Smith, and great granddaughter, Lily Rose, all of Albuquerque, New Mexico and grandson Steven Pena and wife Molly Pena and great granddaughter, Sophie Marie, of Durham, North Carolina; and Sally Valle, grandson Alex Valle of Houston, Texas and granddaughter Angela Berry and husband Chris Berry and great granddaughter, Sommer Ann of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Nell enjoyed bird watching, fishing, hunting fossils, and spending time with her many special friends. Her family would especially like to express our sincere gratitude to all of the wonderful care givers and staff at Cornerstone Village, the ladies of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension Olive Branch Society and particularly to her numerous beautiful friends who shared their time and love with our sister, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, November 2, 2009 in the Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers. Internment of her cremains will be held in Mendenhall, Misssissippi, next to her beloved husband, William Wallace Whitesides. The family requests that visiting hours be observed on Monday, November 2, 2009 from 12:00 pm until service time at Delhomme Funeral Home of Lafayette.
