Peggy Joyce Atkinson Lee

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 13, 2024 in Delhomme Funeral Home - Chapel of the Flowers for Peggy Joyce Atkinson Lee, 92, who passed away on January 5, 2024. Reverend Weldon Bares, Pastor of First United Methodist Church of Lake Charles will conduct the funeral services. Burial will take place in Lafayette Protestant Cemetery. Peggy was born in Mercy Hospital, New Orleans, LA on July 24, 1931. She spent her early years in New Orleans and moved to Lafayette just prior to the start of her 7th grade year. Peggy was a graduate of Lafayette High School and Sophie Newcomb College at Tulane University in New Orleans with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education. She married Charles Ronald Lee in 1953 and they spent their honeymoon traveling to Norfolk, VA for Charles to report for duty in the US Navy. Upon completion of their naval duty, the couple returned to Lafayette where they spent the rest of their days. Peggy taught school at Judice Elementary School for a couple of years then retired for 18 years to raise her two boys, Ted and Ron, only to then re-enter the teaching profession at the Reading Research Foundation School. Peggy retired from Reading Research after 19 years and spent her retirement years with family and friends. Notable is that Peggy was the Queen of the Lafayette Mardi Gras in 1948 and she was always very proud to be part of the team from the Lafayette Service League (now Junior League) that conceptualized, organized, and published the internationally famous cookbook “Talk About Good”. Peggy was an alumni member of Phi Mu sorority and was an alumni member of Chez Ami ladies’ organization. A long-term resident of Lafayette, Peggy was the daughter of the late William A. Atkinson and the former Wilma Pearce. She is survived by her sons, Charles Edward "Ted" Lee and wife, Felecia, and Ronald Kent Lee and wife, Stacy; grandchildren, Lindsey Lee Bumpus and husband, Marshall, Charles Gregory Lee, John Charles Lee and wife, Ariana, and Samantha Nicole Lee, numerous nephews, and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles Ronald Lee, and one brother, William Arthur Atkinson, Jr. and his wife, Billie Cummins Atkinson and niece, Barbara Atkinson Stanfill. The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Delhomme Funeral Home - Bertrand on Saturday, January 13, 2024 from 10:00 AM until the time of service. Pallbearers will be John Lee, Greg Lee, Brian Atkinson, Keith Strenge, David Fisher, Jr., Lindsey Fisher, and Marshall Bumpus.
