Randolph Vernard Malloy

Professor and Assistant Dean of Advanced Education and Hospitals Head, Department of Dentistry, Medical Center of Louisiana at New Orleans (MCLANO) Randolph B. Malloy, DDS, PhD, born and raised in central Iowa and a resident of Louisiana for over 30 years, passed away Thursday, June 12, 2008, at the Heart Hospital of Lafayette, at the age of 62. He attended the University of Iowa and University of Iowa College of Dentistry where he received his D.D.S. with honors. Dr. Malloy then pursued a research path at LSU Medical Center in New Orleans, Louisiana and received a Ph.D. in Anatomy. He went on to serve in the United States Air Force at Wilford Hall USAF Base in San Antonio, Texas. After the Air Force he returned to LSU Medical Center in New Orleans (MCLANO) as an Assistant Professor in the Cell Biology and Anatomy Department and completed his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the LSU School of Dentistry/Charity Hospital New Orleans. Upon completion, he joined an associate in private practice in Lafayette, Louisiana, and maintained part-time appointments in Cell Biology and Anatomy as well as Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the LSU Medical Center, LSU School of Dentistry and Charity Hospital in New Orleans. In 2003, Dr. Malloy returned to LSU Health Sciences Center (LSUHSC)/Charity Hospital New Orleans full-time as Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Dentistry at MCLNO; with appointments in the Departments of Cell Biology and Anatomy and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the LSU Schools of Dentistry and Medicine. Throughout his career Dr. Malloy accomplished several research projects and was the research mentor to numerous residents in various dental specialties. He was a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology. He has been a member of several local, state, regional, and national committees associated with the American Dental Association and the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS). He was serving as Chairman of the Committee on Residency Education and Training for the AAOMS. In 2005 and 2006, he was honored by the AAOMS with the Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Malloy was appointed by the Dean of the LSU School of Dentistry (LSUSD) as project director to rebuild the 'Interim' LSU Dental School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Chairman tasked with rebuilding the school and clinics in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Under his guidance the Baton Rouge school opened in three months and the New Orleans facilities as early as September 2007. That same year, he was promoted to Assistant Dean for Advanced Education and Hospitals at LSUSD, and was serving on a number of committees. Survivors include his wife Tyrona deValcourt, their children Kessler Reed, Kylee and Chad Courville, three granddaughters Piersen and Kendall Reed, Amielle Courville, and his loyal canine companions Kaese, Raven, and 'Big' Marilyn, all of Lafayette. He is also survived by one sister Cinda Petrie and her husband David, one niece Andrea Storjohann all of Marshalltown, Iowa, and one nephew Phillip Petrie of New York City, New York. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Alice Malloy of State Center, IA. The Louisiana State University Health Science Center School of Dentistry New Orleans will host a memorial service to celebrate his life and accomplishments on Thursday June 19, 2008 at 9 am, 4th Floor, Auditorium C. In accordance with his wishes the family will host a private memorial service at a later date. Memorial contributions may be sent to The Three Marilyn's Fund, PO Box 93215, Lafayette, LA 70509.
