Sibylle Maria Bruce

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, April 22, 2025 in Delhomme Funeral Home - Chapel of the Flowers for Sibylle Maria Bruce, 85, who passed away on April 15, 2025. Deacon Art Bakeler will conduct the funeral services. The burial will take place in Fountain Memorial Cemetery. Sibylle Bruce was born in Germany less than a month before the outbreak of World War II in Europe. She and her family had to endure the turbulence, dangers, and loss of wealth brought on by the conflict. Sibylle didn't get to know her father as he lost his life in the war. Escaping close calls with aerial bombardment and combat zones, Sibylle grew up in Germany with her mother, her only sister, and some extended family members. After the war she pursued her education including enrollment in a boarding school and the disciplined leadership of Catholic nuns. Sibylle went on to become trained as a language translator. She spoke not only German, but also English and three other languages. She met an American soldier who had been deployed to Germany during the Cold War period. Sibylle eventually married him and emigrated to the United States where she obtained her American citizenship. Over the years, Sibylle raised three children while working full-time in retail businesses. She had a strong work ethic and was adamant about doing whatever was necessary to complete tasks for her employer. At times, knowing that one of her employers didn't like to pay overtime, Sibylle would sometimes clock out of her shift and then return to complete her duties before leaving for home. Sibylle Bruce was a hard worker, a tenacious provider for her children, and a strong woman. She didn't accrue any material wealth, but she enjoyed engaging with customers who would frequent the retail establishments she served. Many people expressed over the years that they enjoyed Sibylle's smile, kind words, and her obvious enjoyment of chatting and sharing stories about her life experiences. Mrs. Bruce, a resident of Lafayette, was the daughter of the late Dr. Hans Drath and the former Edith Arlt. She is survived by her children, Britton Bruce and wife, Leah, Pamela Johnson, and Vanessa Ingold; grandchildren, Ethan Bruce, Vanessa Cantrell and husband, Joseph; two great grandchildren, Cassidy Cantrell and Maci Cantrell. She was preceded in death by her parents, and sister, Monica. The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Delhomme Funeral Home - Bertrand on Tuesday, April 22, 2025 from 9:00 AM until the time of service.
