Sigmund John Gary

Sigmund John Gary, age 86, died on Tuesday, March 10, 2015 in Lafayette, Louisiana, surrounded by his devoted wife of 65 years, Judith Stemmans Gary, and his children and grandchildren. He was the father of Linda Jones (Mrs. Ivan Jones), Catherine Hollier (Mrs. Stephen Hollier) and Edward Gary (Renee Gary). He was the proud grandfather of Allison Morvant (Mrs. Jason Morvant), Sarah Jones, Emily Smith (Mrs. Jay Smith), Mary Catherine Dunphy (Mrs. Brandon Dunphy), Sean Walley, Bridget Gary and Charles Gary, and great-grandfather of Camille Morvant, Benjamin Morvant and Evan Smith. Mr. Gary was the son of the late Clement Joseph Gary and Marie Babineaux Gary. He was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Gary and three sisters, Winnie Monteleon, Evelyn Terrell and Hilda Howard. Mr. Gary was a 1945 graduate of Lafayette High School where he served as senior class president and was a delegate for Boys' State. Upon graduation, he attended Southwestern Louisiana University (University of Louisiana at Lafayette) where he was a member of the varsity football team. As a professional, Mr. Gary was Vice President of Southern Flow Measurement Companies, retiring after 35 years. During his career, he was a member of various professional organizations associated with the gas measurement industry. Mr. Gary loved to serve his community. He was an active parishioner of St. Jules Catholic Church, where he served as parish president, lector and usher. He was a member of the Lions' Club and also served as its president. He was a founding member of the St. Jules Credit Union in 1968 serving as its first board president and in other capacities over the next 30 years. He also served on the board of the Louisiana Credit Union League. In retirement, Mr. Gary enjoyed traveling with his family and friends, playing golf, hunting, fishing, gardening and woodworking. He hand-crafted furniture for each of his granddaughters, which he made with cypress from the barn once belonging to his father-in-law, Eddie Stemmans. Mr. Gary's family would like to express deep gratitude for the compassionate care provided to him and his family by AMG Specialty Hospital at Park Place. Pallbearers will be Charles Gary, Sean Walley, Brandon Dunphy, Jay Smith, Dr. Jason Morvant and Charles Stemmans. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, March 13, 2015, at a 3:00 PM Mass of Christian Burial in Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers in Lafayette. The family requests that visiting hours be observed on Thursday, March 12, 2015 in Delhomme Funeral Home on Bertrand from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 PM on Thursday evening in the funeral home. Visiting hours will continue on Friday from 11:00 AM until the time of service. Entombment will be in Evangeline Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Carencro. Reverend F. Hampton Davis, III, Pastor of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Lafayette, will be the Celebrant of the Funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services.
